Introducing Schedule Hub for MS Project

  • Updated

Why Schedule Hub

Microsoft Project (“MS Project”) is a widely used planning tool, deeply embedded across many industries where professional project managers rely on its rich scheduling capabilities.

With Microsoft Project Online being retired in September 2026, organisations using MS Project face a dilemma: Project Online provided the cloud-based aggregation facility for all project plans, to support enterprise reporting, resource sharing and governance across projects. Without it, one is left with just a collection of disconnected project plans: they can be edited individually but they do not share their information of tasks, milestones, and resource demand with the enterprise.

Schedule Hub for MS Project addresses this need by offering a low-cost, easy to implement, cloud-native alternative to both Project Online and Project Server Subscription Edition (SE).

It provides a secure, governed repository for MS Project .mpp files in SharePoint Online, combined with automated extraction of schedule data into Dataverse (the database of the Power Platform). This creates a single, enterprise-grade dataset for reporting, governance, portfolio management, and future AI use cases.

Schedule Hub is designed for organisations that:

  • Rely on MS Project Desktop for complex scheduling
  • Require enterprise governance, reporting, and auditability
  • Wish to avoid the cost and operational burden of on-premises Project Server
  • Want to remain fully aligned with the Microsoft 365 and Power Platform roadmap, with the ability to join MS Project schedules to PPM solutions built with Power Apps or other platforms.

Schedule Hub Concept

Power Framework Schedule Hub is a schedule data management, governance, and integration solution for MS Project Desktop.

It operates entirely within the customer’s Microsoft 365 tenant, using standard, supported Microsoft technologies. It provides a comprehensive set of capabilities that together replace the core scheduling, governance, and reporting functions of Project Online, while remaining simpler and more flexible.

Key Components

The high-level solution concept is as follows:

SharePoint Cloud Repository for MS Project Plans

A central, governed repository for MS Project .mpp files in SharePoint Online, where project managers maintain their project plans using MS Project desktop.

Extraction to Dataverse

Whenever a major version of a plan is saved into the Schedule Hub SharePoint library, all its data is automatically extracted to a Dataverse database, making it available to the organisation for viewing, reporting, integration etc.

Schedule Hub App

This is a Power App that is included to view extracted project data.

Enterprise Resource Pool

The Schedule Hub App also maintains a central Enterprise Resources table, to define resources that can be shared across projects.

Power BI Data Model

Schedule data is made available via Power BI, as the ‘single source of truth’ for reporting at project and aggregate portfolio level. Out of the box reports are provided, as well as the ability to create ad-hoc custom reports and data extracts.

Power Framework PPM Integration

Built and deployed in Microsoft’s low-code Power Platform, Schedule Hub is easily integrated with PPM solutions such as Power Framework PPM, to augment MS Project schedule data with full project portfolio management capabilities.
