Introducing Portfolio Modelling

Power Framework PPM's modelling feature allows you to create scenario models to simulate 'what-if' scenarios. The 'What-If' conditions you can apply allow you to simulate the moving of projects, changing their durations, taking them out of the portfolio and other manipulations.

With each 'What-if' simulation step applied, you will instantly see the impact on resource and financial demand. You will work with multiple models that you can compare to identify the portfolio scenario that provides the most effective use of resources for the best outcomes.

High-level Processes

Here is a high-level overview of the processes that are supported by this feature:

Model Creation

A model is created by selecting a variety of projects that are in the system, with defined resource and financial forecasts. These will be projects that we are looking to start in the future (and looking to simulate different start dates or durations or what if we took them out altogether), or that are already in delivery (and we might simulate stopping them or putting them on hold with a future date to resume).

A number of parameters are entered such as the time window of the model we are creating.

Apply 'What-if' Simulations

Projects in the model can be manipulated as follows to simulate scenarios:

  • Drag on the timeline to simulate modifying the start date

  • De-select to simulate the removal/cancellation of the project

  • Shorten or extend the duration of the project

  • Split the project (and then manipulate project sections individually)

The impact on utilisation of people and financial resources can be instantly reviewed as the system instantly calculates the usage figures over time, to reflect the steps you have applied.

Clone the model and create alternative scenarios

Cloning copies the model in its current state to another, where you can apply different simulations to come up with an alternative scheduling scenario. The system then lets you compare models to help you decide which is to be the chosen scenario.

Model analytics

All scenario model data is provided via a Power BI data model, with various sample reports helping to analyse models and provide further input to portfolio decisions.

Apply the model

No 'what-if' steps ever update the original project data. Once a model is to be applied, then details of the steps are communicated to projects so that project owners can update their project to match the changes suggested by the model.
