Modelling Screen: Applying 'What-if' Simulations

  • Updated

The top section of the Modelling screen shows projects that can be manipulated in various ways, to simulate possible scheduling scenarios and seeing the impact on resource and investment data.

Types of Simulations

Move the project

To simulating a change to the project start date, click on the project and drag it to the left (to start earlier than the original start date) or to the right (to simulate a later start date.

Remove the project

To simulate the cancellation of an entire project, click on the light bulb button to the left of the project - this will remove the project's resource and investment demand values from the calculation. The project will show greyed out with its name crossed out.

Change project duration

Shorten or extend the duration of the project, by dragging the start or end of the project bar in either direction. The simulation will recalculate the demand values of the project by proportionally redistributing  them across the simulated time period.

Split the project (and manipulate project sections individually)

Simulate a project going on hold and the remainder resuming later by splitting the project and then moving the future section of the project. Other manipulations described above can be performed against these sections individually now.

To split the project, right-click on the project in the month column where the split is to be applied. The following window allows you confirm the split:

Undoing simulation steps

Click History to the right of the top section to show a panel listing all the simulation steps you have applied. Each shows an Undo button.

Clicking Undo against any of the steps will reverse the selected step and all steps before it (higher up in the list).

Click Reset All at the top of this panel to reverse all.

Reviewing the impact

With each 'what-if' simulation step applied, relevant data in the bottom section of the screen is recalculated. See separate articles to learn how to review both Investment and Resource data.
